Position Description: Instructor
Responsibilities: Responsible for training volunteers by providing group instruction in the Orton-Gillingham approach, following a standard lesson plan and utilizing generally accepted instructional techniques including lecture, work-books, audio visual material and demonstration. Content to be covered includes:
- the concept and phenomena of dyslexia and learning disabilities.
- history principles, and techniques of the Orton-Gillingham approach.
- understanding the impact of expressive and receptive language an DTP clients.
- principles and policies of confidentiality, privacy, and tutor and client safety.
- orientation to the variety of clients served by DTP, and the particularly challenges
which they may present in individualizing teaching.
- preparation for the experience of and the techniques and resources for the alleviation
of learning-related anxiety in the tutor and student
- the need to let student progress determine the pace of instruction.
- consulting and administering resources available to the tutor through DTP professional
and administrative staff
- the understanding and use of the manual for tutors.
- the development of lesson plans.
- use of sound/symbol drills, role playing and the demonstration of the spelling rules and
techniques
- sequential teaching and the use of techniques such as phonic wheels and cut-up
syllables
- orientation to the need for the tutor to attend at least two workshops designed
especially for beginning tutors the first year.
- preparation and format of the first meeting between tutor and student.
Requirements: Formal training in the Orton-Gillingham method and at least 5 years of experience in working with students in this method. Experience in training or supervision of others in this approach is desirable. Instructors must be available to teach at least one course consisting of 8 (9 if needed) weekly 2 1/2 hour teaching sessions annually, to meet with tutors individually at least once after each training session, and to attend up to three meetings annually with other instructors and/or DTP staff.

Dyslexia Tutoring Program is looking for volunteers to become tutors for children and adults with dyslexia and other language based learning differences, in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. Volunteers are required to have a high school diploma, a basic knowledge of how the English language works and an open mind.
